About Big Brothers Big Sisters
For 51 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Missouri has served children facing adversity by matching them with caring, supportive adult role models, known as “Bigs”. Bigs are trained to identify and support the potential in each child known as a “Little”.
The impact of this extra adult support for children is outstanding. Among our Littles, there is a 100% high school graduation rate in contrast to an overall Columbia Public Schools graduation rate of 89.1% in school year 2017.
Compared to when they started the program, after one year of participation:
71% of Littles report improved grades in school.
24% more Littles say they plan to finish high school.
30% more Little have plans to attend and graduate college.
36% more Littles say it isn’t ok to use illegal/illicit substances, skip school, break school rules or hit someone.
Bigs also frequently share the relationship they’ve developed with their Little has changed and enriched their lives.
